Monsoon Wellness Tips

We all love monsoon and we wait for the rainy season after going through the scorching summers. The first downpour truly feels like a sigh of relief after the crazy hot summers.

Monsoon is definitely the best time to enjoy hot tea and pakoras, but this is also that time of the year when infectious diseases are on the ascent.

The cool downpour of the monsoon, brings with it negative health impacts along with it which we need to safeguard ourself from.

We are aware of a lot of health issues and infections that are brought about by monsoons and we ought to be very careful to protect ourselves from.

Below I have listed a few precautionary health measures which one can take to avoid any kind of health hazards/ infections and also mentioned some food changes that can be made for a healthier monsoon.

?Good health in Monsoon:

Drink a lot of water– It is very important to keep yourself hydrated in monsoons, just like any other month by consuming 8-10 glasses of water as water helps in dissolving fats and soluble fiber helping them to pass through smoothly and easily.

Hydrate
Keep yourself hydrated.

✓ Cleanliness- One needs to take up the cleaning part seriously as it is the time of the year where your house is the messiest and open to all infections that rain brings along. I can’t stress enough on the importance of cleaning you hands and feets with water every time you come home from outside. One easy way to get rid of germs and keeping your home clean in rainy season is to clean it twice a day with a proper disinfectant. This will not only kill the germs and make you and your family fall less sick.

✓ Green tea-

Green Tea is loaded with antioxidants and is very good for the body. Some of the health benefits of green tea are it improves brain function, fat loss, lowers the risk of cancer, increases fat burn and improves physical performance, reduces risk of alzheimer’s, improves dental health and lowers the risk of becoming obese. Green Tea also has a good amount of caffeine, so it will definitely going to keep you on your toes.

?Monsoon Wellness:

It is also advisable to Wear long sleeves in monsoons and to always use a mosquito repellent.

✓ Also one needs to Avoid going outdoors in heavy rains-

•It might be very tempting to walk in the rains and enjoy the first splash of the season but rain water makes you prone to a host of many viral diseases such as leptospirosis and it may also cause a numerous fungal infections on your feet and nails.

•Also, if your feet get wet, you need to dry them immediately and do not stay in wet socks or shoes for long.

•Also, keep in mind, one should never wear damp clothes in an air-conditioned enclosed area as it exposes the risk of acquiring chest colds and respiratory infections.

?Food precautions in monsoon:

It is better not to go for the watery food and stick to dry food items during the monsoons.

And also, choose seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Seasonal fruits
Seasonal fruits

Monsoon is one time of the year where it is advisable to Stay away from green leafy vegetables, cauliflower, ladyfinger, sprouted grains, potato.

Soak all your greens in salt water for 10 min to remove insects and germs.

Also, some fruits like jamun ,Watermelon, muskmelon are all high-water content fruits and can be avoided as their smell may attract flies and they also cause an increase in water retention in the body that might cause swelling.

The drinks available outside like lassi, lime water and other watery fruits should be skipped all together.

One can go for the dry counterparts like pea, flour, corn etc.

Did you know, consumption of too much watery food during monsoon can give rise to swelling in your body. So, it’s better to avoid them in monsoons.

Also, avoid dairy products like milk as they take time to digest and are very heavy on your gut.

You need to make sure you are not eating a lot of sea food. The fish you eat could possibly cause cholera or diarrhoea due to the contaminated water in the rains.

Street food
Avoid street food.

It is extremely important to skip any roadside food on monsoons be it fried junk food or chaat. The chances of water-borne diseases are highest in this time and you don’t want to risk your health for one plate of golgappas, right?

So kill such cravings for this season , stay indoors as much as possible and eat healthy and properly cooked home food only.
